Samsung has announced their third-generation Galaxy Z Fold this week at their virtual unpacked event, squashing any rumours that they have given up on folding phones. The cellphone giant has promised that the new edition is the best folding phone by far, but it will take a lot more than promises to convince smartphone users to take a chance on the new device.
Why you should consider getting the Galaxy Z Fold 3
The Galaxy Z Fold 3 does seem like a reliable and sturdy phone, an improvement on previous models and Samsung does seem very confident in the durability of their latest addition, with a newly designed protective and scratch resistant film over the main screen and the cover screen has been upgrade to Gorilla Glass Victus. This gives the new Fold 80% more resilience than its earlier counterparts.
Even though the Z Fold 3 is one of the heaviest phones released this year, it is still 11 grams lighter than the last and with a 7.6 inch display, the extra weight is worth it. The device uses less energy and has a longer battery life, with smaller dual batteries to lessen the heaviness.
Another great feature is that the phone is water resistant and can endure being under 1.5 meters of water. If you had a specific colour in mind you are out of luck with only three colours too choose from, phantom green, phantom silver or phantom black, limited choices, but you can learn to live with it.
Samsung’s new fold does support the use of an S Pen, but you will have to fork out an extra amount if you would like to use one on the phone. There are two options, the S Pen Fold edition and the S Pen Pro, both has Bluetooth, yet the S Pen Pro has more features and costs double the price of the S Pen Fold, so do some research and make the most informed decision for your needs before purchasing one.
Setting the phone apart from many other Samsung models is the device’s 12GB of RAM and a choice between 256GB or 512GB of storage. The built in AR filters, can record 8K video and five cameras ranging between a 12-megapixel wide lens, 12-megapixel ultra-wide and a 12-megapixel telephoto with 2x optical zoom. The device runs Android 11 and comes with software updates that sets it apart from everyday phones.
Here comes the make or brake factor, you can get your hands on one for R37,999 in South Africa from next month, which gives enough time to decide if it’s worth the price tag.
