iMac in RED?

When I saw the new Apple iMac range and noticed the red model, I was a bit irritated. Actually I was a lot irritated.

I have been a fan of red gadgets and the colour in general ever since I get a red limited BlackBerry Z10 Developer Edition smartphone. When I got my first Apple iPhone 5s I got a red cover and I did the same when I was protecting my MacBook Air with a snap on cover. Red.

Obviously the (RED) product line attracted my attention but I was never really that into them to the extend that I actually got one. Now with the new iPhone 12 I am leaning towards the mini model and the red has definitely caught my attention again. Sadly it has caught the attention of the rest of South Africa as well since it is proving to be a very hard colour to secure in stores.

I saw RED, iMac RED

When Apple announced the new colours of the upcoming iMac range that contain the M1 chip, which I love, I was a bit miffed with the red colour because I want it.

I am however not going to give up on my iMac 27″ with 5K display just to have a 24″ red iMac. It simply does not make sense. But oh the wanting is strong and I will probably not do it because in South Africa we will once again be looking at a price that does not make it worth the effort to convert our current loved iMac models just yet.

For me one of the great things about my current model is that I can still increase the RAM. I started with 8GB and recently went to 16GB. I still have room to expand and feel that since I do not have that option with the newer models I am not going to be pursuing the new models, yet.

Still, it does look awesome.

Why am I holding out?

Some people like big screens and when it comes to the 27″ iMac screen, it is a lot of screen real estate infant of you while you work. 24″ is just not the same for me.

I know this because I currently run a 24″ out of the 27″ as a secondary monitor. It is big, but it is not the same. Trust me. Size does matter in this case.

The other thing that does bother me a bit is this trend of Apple to only have USB C inputs across the ranges. I get it. It is faster, but I think that the world is still loving the current USB inputs and this does bother me a bit as I still have hardware that do require the popular inputs across the board. Yes, you can go and buy an adaptor but that means you have to budget for it ahead of your purchase and make sure the version you buy does provide you with all the input and output options you might needs currently and for the foreseeable future.

I would like to see a 27″ iMac with the M1 chip and at least 16GB of RAM onboard before I would seriously consider trading in my current model for a new one. Then again, to be quit honest, I am not sure if 16GB of RAM is going to be overkill considering the speed at which the new M1 chips operate at.

But this is about me and red colour, not the rest of the considerations I take into account.

The big issue I have is that this wonderful red colour will not be enjoyed by me as I sit in front of it. It will be enjoyed by my wall… and that, in my case, is pretty useless.
