Will technology replace workers after Covid-19?

More corporations are looking to technology and automation in the workplace in the wake of of the third wave of Covid-19 and most countries are finding themselves overwhelmed by the pandemic.

Be it digital or automation, many workers are not being able to fulfil their duties to the extent that was expected before the outbreak. Even though there are many industries and positions that will never be replaced by tech, the sad truth is that a great deal of labour will become unnecessary thanks to technological advances.

Our every day lives have been greatly advanced by technology, eliminating the need to leave the comfort of your house. All you need is an internet connection and a device that allows you to carry out online tasks and you are all set for isolation. Which is very convenient for social distancing.

Technology and the SA Post Office

Unfortunately not all technological advances will be positive for everyone. Sadly many positions filled by people will be replaced with tech. An example of this is the need for the SA Post Office which is a state owned enterprise.

The SA Post Office employs over 16,480 people and its existence has been made unessential by all the technological communication improvements that has taken place in the last couple of decades. Not only are people not sending letters and packages through the Post Office as regularly as in the past, but express delivering courier companies have eliminated the need for their ‘slow’ service.

We have seen tech creeping into the workspace for many years, numerous positions in more organized and predictable conditions such as warehouses or factories have been replaced with machines that automate tasks previously done by employees. This move is more cost effective for corporations as machines costs less than skilled workers over time.

Many new programs and products have flooded the market since the start of Covid-19 and numerous people lost their livelihoods because of businesses failing to keep their doors open due to a lack of clientele.

The only industries that seems to be thriving in recent days are tech based companies, businesses that have embraced all the technical advances available on the market, countless of them available for free. This makes it an easy transition for any company trying to save money any way possible even if that includes a skilled labourer’s income.
